Lesson Essential Question(s): How do I use scale?
Duration: 2 periods; 45 minutes each

Instructional Procedures:
Activation Question: How do we know how far away something is on a map? Students should do a think-pair-share before discussing as a class. Introduce scale and lead discussion into how this might change based on the size of your map.
Hands-on: Complete Map Scale Practice worksheet with a partner. Meet with another set of partners when finished to compare answers. When the entire class is finished discuss.
Lesson: Complete Using a Map Scale worksheet together.
Activity: Break students into groups of four or five students. Working together they should create a map of the classroom. This should be completed on graph paper so they can use the blocks as a reference. Discuss with the class prior to starting how long each block should be. When complete students should compare maps among groups and be able to defend their reasoning.
Practice: Students should complete What is the Distance? worksheet independently. This will be used a the summative assessment for this lesson.
Formative Assessment: The teacher should be attentive during the hands-on and activity sessions and assist students as needed. Extra practice can be provided as needed.
